BYU AI Procurement Statement
We are actively exploring possible options for the safe use of AI related services on our campus. However, you may not enter internal, sensitive, or restricted data into any generative AI tool or service. Only publicly available information (data that has no legal or other requirement for confidentiality, integrity, or availability under the Freedom of Information Act) may be used in generative AI tools and services. AI tools may generate incomplete, incorrect, or biased responses, so any output should be closely reviewed and verified by qualified university personnel with responsibility over the associated area/task. In addition, AI-generated code should not be used for institutional IT systems and services unless it is reviewed and verified by qualified University personnel with responsibility over the associated area/task.
The use of Nonpublic Institutional Data with publicly available generative AI tools is prohibited without prior security and privacy review. This includes personally identifiable employee data, FERPA-covered student data, HIPAA-covered patient data, and may include research that is not yet publicly available. Generative AI systems, applications, and software products that process, analyze, or move Nonpublic Institutional Data require a security review before they are acquired/used, even if the tool or service is free. This review will help ensure the security and privacy of any of our non-public institutional data.
