Dinosaurs were a group of reptiles that lived millions of years ago, dominating Earth during a period called the Mesozoic Era, which spanned about 180 million years. This era is split into three periods: the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous. Dinosaurs came in many shapes and sizes, from small, bird-like creatures to massive, long-necked giants like the Brachiosaurus. They were divided into two main groups based on their hip structure: the Saurischians, which included the famous T. rex, and the Ornithischians, which included plant-eaters like the Triceratops. Some dinosaurs were carnivores (meat-eaters), while others were herbivores (plant-eaters).

Dinosaurs went extinct around 66 million years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous Period. Scientists believe that a massive asteroid impact, along with volcanic activity, caused environmental changes that made it difficult for dinosaurs to survive. However, not all dinosaurs vanished completely. Birds are considered the closest living relatives to certain types of dinosaurs, specifically the theropods, which included creatures like Velociraptor. This connection between birds and dinosaurs helps scientists understand more about how dinosaurs might have looked, moved, and even behaved.
