Obtaining a Microsoft 365 Copilot License

About Microsoft 365 Copilot

Microsoft 365 Copilot (Copilot 365) is an AI tool that is available to BYU full-time and student employees through an enterprise-wide agreement. Copilot 365 can be accessed through applying for a license, although it is not guaranteed that every application will be granted due to a limited number of licenses. Applications are granted for those whose needs can be met by the unique capabilities of Copilot 365; those with more general AI needs are encouraged to use Microsoft Copilot (Enterprise), a similar tool that is freely available to all of campus. See more information about the difference between the two tools here.

Integrating Copilot 365

M365 Copilot can integrate with the Microsoft 365 suite of applications, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and others. Integrating these services can be done by vising m365.cloud.microsoft/chat, and accessing a chatbot that allows you to create chats and message back and forth with Microsoft Copilot, using either “Work” or “Web.”

Web
Web is similar to other generative AI tools, responding to prompts by collecting information from the web and synthesizing existing information.
Work
Work is a specific tool designed to use data from your Microsoft apps, including emails, messages, files, and more. For example, you can prompt it to summarize new emails in your inbox, create a meeting summary based on a Word doc, or organize Teams messages with a specific person over a given period.
Tip
Looking for a way to record Teams meetings and generate AI meeting notes? While Microsoft 365 Copilot does include this feature, signing up for Teams Premium is a less expensive option to unlock this capability for employees. If your main use case for AI is to create meeting summaries, consider registering for Teams Premium instead of M365 using the form below.
